This artwork is inspired by the article Climate gradients drive the evolution of seed morphology and life history with impacts to seedling fitness in Fraxinus nigraby LoPiccolo, K. R. and colleagues (2026). I chose a more abstract approach to represent the concepts explored in this study. At the center of the artwork, ash samaras are layered on top of one another. This accumulation evokes the diversity of traits observed within the species. Surrounding the samaras, I represented mother trees as a broader ring. This artistic choice reflects the importance of maternal investment highlighted by the study. A second, narrower ring located at the periphery of the artwork represents the different populations distributed along a climatic gradient. This concentric composition, inspired by radial diagrams, aims to illustrate the interactions among climate, populations, mother trees, and seed traits.
